Terms & Conditions

Version 1.1 · updated 13 July 2026

Welcome to Sankofa Carpool. These terms explain how the platform works and the rules for using it. By creating an account and using Sankofa Carpool, you agree to them.

1. What Sankofa Carpool is

Sankofa Carpool is only a match-making platform. It connects commuters (car owners with a seat to share) with co-travellers who need a ride, to help ease traffic at peak times and let road users get about more efficiently in both time and cost. Sankofa Carpool is not a transport operator or taxi service — we do not own vehicles, employ drivers, or provide transport, and we are not a party to any ride arranged through the platform.

2. Cost-sharing, not profit

For all users to stay compliant and for the platform to remain a carpooling service, price offers must not be made with profit in mind. For legal reasons, the price for any ride posted must closely reflect the actual cost of sharing that journey. To help everyone stay within the law, we provide a realistic price-ceiling framework to guide the offers car owners set. Offers must stay within this guidance.

3. Payments are between you and the other party

All transactions are strictly between the two parties. You settle the agreed cost-share directly with each other (mobile money or cash) at pickup. Sankofa Carpool never holds, transfers, or takes any commission on ride money — we charge 0% commission on rides, forever. Sankofa Carpool charges only optional subscription fees, processed by our payment partner.

4. Verification

All users must be verified before using the platform. Every user provides a Ghana Card. Car owners also provide a valid driver’s licence, roadworthy certificate, and vehicle insurance certificate. We carry out these checks in good faith, but verification is not a guarantee of any person’s identity or character, or of any vehicle’s condition.

5. Eligibility and your responsibilities

You must be at least 18 years old, provide accurate information, and use the platform lawfully. Car owners must drive safely and keep their licence, roadworthy certificate, and insurance valid and appropriate for carrying co-travellers. Providing false or fraudulent documents will lead to removal from the platform and may be reported to the authorities.

6. Travel at your own risk; our liability

You travel at your own risk. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Sankofa Carpool is not liable for the conduct of users, or for any accident, injury, loss, damage, delay, no-show, or dispute arising from a ride. You agree to indemnify Sankofa Carpool against claims arising from your use of the platform or from your rides.

7. Safety features are not emergency services

Features such as women-only matching, the panic button, and live trip sharing are there to help, but they do not replace the emergency services. In an emergency, call 191 (Police), 192 (Fire), 193 (Ambulance), or 112.

8. Reliability and disputes

Your conduct on the platform affects your reliability score. If you believe a deduction is unfair, you can raise a dispute, which we review and resolve in good faith and at our reasonable discretion.

9. Prohibited conduct

You must not operate as a commercial taxi, bypass the platform to avoid the cost-sharing framework, harass or discriminate against others (other than using the opt-in women-only safety feature), carry unlawful goods, or misuse another person’s data or the app.

10. Free tier and subscriptions

Every user gets a free weekly allowance: 3 trips in your first week after signing up, then 1 trip per week — counted separately for booking rides and for offering rides. Beyond your allowance you can subscribe to keep going, or wait for your week to reset and continue for free. Subscriptions are billed through our payment partner; you can cancel at any time and cancellation stops future billing.

11. Tree Planting Fund

3% of all subscription revenue is set aside for the Tree Planting Fund and used to plant trees across Ghana.

12. Marketplace listings

The Marketplace lists fuel stations, insurers, mechanics, spare-parts dealers and EV charging points for your convenience. These are independent businesses that we do not own or control. Unless a listing is marked as a Partner — meaning that business has a commercial relationship with Sankofa Carpool — it is simply an entry we compiled, and we have no arrangement with them. A listing is not a recommendation or an endorsement. Prices, opening hours and contact details can change, so confirm them with the business before relying on them. Anything you agree with them is between you and them.

13. Your data and privacy

We process your personal data (including your Ghana Card, driver’s licence, insurance details, phone number, and location) to verify you, match rides, and keep you safe, in line with Ghana’s Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843). Our Privacy Policy sets out in full what we collect, why, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the rights you have over it — including access, correction and deletion. You can read it in the app under Settings → Legal, and on our website at /privacy.

14. Your account

We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms, fails verification, or raises safety concerns.

15. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time and will let you know in the app. Continuing to use Sankofa Carpool after an update means you accept the updated terms.

16. Ownership

The Sankofa Carpool app, name, logo, and content are the property of Sankofa Carpool and may not be used without permission.

17. Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Ghana, and the courts of Ghana have jurisdiction over any dispute relating to them.

18. Acceptance

By creating an account and using Sankofa Carpool, you confirm that you have read, understood, and accepted these terms.
